This repo contains the code for a simple Go-based installer for the new Windows store.

Releases

To create a release, create and push a new tag of the form vX.X.X. This will trigger the GitHub Action and automatically create a new release. The releases are intended to be consumed through the store on Windows 11, not directly.

Timeouts and checking hashes
This PR should improve the downloader app in 2 ways:

First, it adds timeouts to http.Client when downloading the file, which is a best practice (more details) as in case of network error, the request would otherwise just hang making the app wait forever in background.

When downloading a file, we can't use http.Client.Timeout because the file is very large and users' Internet connection may just be slow. So I've implemented a custom stream copy function that checks if at least 200 bytes are being transferred every 5 seconds. If not, it assumes there's a network failure (maybe the client lost Internet connectivity) and makes the request fail.

While downloading the file, the app computes the SHA256 checksum too and compares that with the expected one from our update server. This should allow checking if the download was corrupted.

PS: I've also added a custom user-agent cli/vscode-winsta11er to all requests, to identify this client

vscode-winsta11er ignores system proxy configurations

Since Golang implements its HTTP client independent from system network stack, proxy configurations in Internet Properties are ignored. Thus, the installer could not work in the situation where all traffic must go through HTTP proxies, enforced by system administrators.

#3 may fix this problem.
